THE FELDENKRAIS METHOD

The Feldenkrais Method uses awareness to learn about our movement habits and preferences. Investigating the connections and functional relationships of our musculoskeletal and nervous system we begin to know how we move and interact in the world. It introduces a wider vocabulary of movements that give us more possibilities to choose from for efficient action.

Feldenkrais is taught in group classes called Awareness Through Movement or individual lessons called Functional Integration.

“What I’m after isn’t flexible bodies, but flexible minds and to restore each person to their human dignity.” – Moshe Feldenkrais

AWARENESS THROUGH MOVEMENT (ATM)

Awareness Through Movement classes consist of lessons that offer an opportunity to study our patterns and learn about ourselves. The movements are often unusual, seemingly simple, done slowly, mostly small and with attention. The important element is cultivating awareness and an internal sense of movements and possibilities.

The classes will help you move more easily, efficiently and gracefully by eliminating unnecessary tension and effort. You will feel more relaxed and alive, enjoying better posture, breathing and freedom from pain.

These classes are set in a safe, small group environment sensitively facilitated by Judit.

Classes mostly involve participants recumbent on the floor while being verbally guided through gentle movement explorations.

You will need to bring a mat or blanket to lie on and to wear warm and comfortable clothes which allow easy movement.

People with muscular or skeletal injuries, neurological disorders, pain or tension, limitation in movement, as part of rehabilitation program, and people who have difficulty sitting, standing and walking will benefit from these classes. They are also ideal for those who wish to improve their sport, drama, dance, music performance or other physical skills.

FUNCTIONAL INTEGRATION (FI)

Just as in the group classes, the individual lessons aim to bring awareness to how we organise ourselves, improve movement and renew connections between parts of ourselves that feel good and require less effort. In a Functional Integration lesson this happens through gentle, but specific touch adapted to each individuals abilities and needs.

You will be first consulted on the difficulties you experience.  This will be followed by a hands on approach lying or sitting on a low ‘table’. Please wear clothes that allow easy movement and will keep you warm.

These lessons are helpful for people with musculoskeletal problems, tension, pain, stiffness, limited movement or hyper mobility. Functional Integration lessons are appropriate for a wide range of people of all ages and abilities and offer huge benefits for people with movement disorders.

FI lessons have shown improvements in infants and children with neurological and developmental challenges.
